China is situated in the eastern part of the Asian continent on the western coast of the Pacific. It has a total land area of 9.6 million square km. In addition to the land territory, China possesses vast territorial seas, with the Chinese mainland facing the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea and the South China Sea on the east and south.

China has a complex terrain, which descends from the west to the east step by step. Mountains, plateaus and hills make up 65 percent of China’s total land area. Seven of the 19 mountains peaks over 8,000 meters above sea level in the world are found in China. China also abounds in rivers and lakes, with the length of all rivers totaling 220,000km. There are more than 5,000 rivers each having a drainage area of over 100 square km and more than 2,800 lakes each having a surface area of over 1 square km, of which the surface area of 13 lakes exceeds 1,000 square km.
