China, the most populous country in the world, had a total population of 130,756 million at the end of 2005, according to the “Statistic Communique on National Economic and Social Development in 2005” published by the National Bureau of Statistics.
Moreover, the population density was high, with 135 people per sq km, but unevenly distributed. Along the densely populated coastal areas in the east, there were more than 400 people per sq km; in the central area, over 200; and in the sparsely populated plateaus in the west, there were less than 10 people per sq km.
